courage de vivre is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by glass artist Akiko Toda.
Glass is a material that captures and reflects light with remarkable beauty. However, what Akiko Toda explores is not merely its outward brilliance.

Beyond the transparent mass of glass lies a serene world that evokes both the vastness of outer space and the depths of the ocean. Within these works, layers of light and color are joined by gold and silver leaf, enamel decoration, and other techniques, creating rich, multidimensional surfaces. As the viewing angle shifts and light changes, entirely different expressions emerge, each radiating its own unique glow. Every time one looks into her work, a new landscape reveals itself. It is as though another world exists within the glass.

This sense of depth mirrors Toda's own approach to creation. Remaining true to her instincts and continuing to refine her work until she is completely satisfied, she pursues her vision with a determination that can at times seem uncompromising. That unwavering commitment lends each piece both exceptional craftsmanship and a quiet sense of tension.
