Chie Tanaka's creative process begins with gently hammering a sheet of copperーtap, tap, tap.
Holding a backing metal inside, she alternates between a wooden mallet and a hammer. As she continues to strike the surface, she says she begins to hear voices guiding herー"this way," "that way."
What Tanaka values most is a dialogue with the material. She listens closely to its voice, engaging with it as if in conversation, allowing each form to gradually emerge and grow. The works born from this process stand quietly in the exhibition space, yet they seem almost alive.
They appear to stretch, to chat, to move at any momentーimbued with a vivid, organic presence.
This exhibition features a wide range of pieces, including her popular kettles, Oritatamu・ Byōbu, SORA no BON, and many smaller works.
The kettle shown here is titled "Kibun wa Odekake♪" ("In the Mood to Go Out♪").
In addition to their striking forms, be sure to enjoy the delightful and whimsical titles that are sure to bring a smile.
