"I have long been creating works inspired by insects that seem well-suited to glass. In my process, I place great importance on both form and color. Every day, I challenge myself to express the colors of real insects through a glass-like interpretation. At the same time, imagining 'what if an insect had colors like this?' is one of the pleasures of my creative journey. Things don't always turn out the way I envision, but by continuing the work, there are moments when I unexpectedly encounter a color I've been seeking." Yoshiko Minagawa
Glass artist Yoshiko Minagawa creates delicate and meticulously crafted flamework pieces inspired by insects, marine creatures, and plants found in the natural world. During the process of making drifting jellyfish, she discovered a fascinating phenomenon: the jellyfish's thread-like legs--no thicker than sewing thread--momentarily disappear due to the rising heat of hot work, only to reappear when the temperature increases even further.
By directing her attention to details that are often overlooked and patiently engaging with each element, Minagawa embraces daily challenges that lead to new discoveries. These experiences are what elevate her work--often described as "superb craftsmanship"--toward an even more technical and lifelike expression.
This exhibition will feature insects, plants, and jellyfish, as well as lidded containers and hina dolls. We warmly invite you to visit and enjoy the show.
