This is an exhibition by ceramic artist Shuji Okami, whose studio is located 600 m above sea level in Masuho Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, from where Mt. Fuji can be seen.
Works fired over several days in a cave kiln radiate a serene tranquility while showcasing the beautiful expression of natural glazes. They command a strong presence not only in traditional Japanese spaces but in stylish Western-style ones as well.
Mr. Okami, whose grandfather was a joiner specializing in transom panels in Fukagawa, naturally cultivated an eye for craftsmanship from childhood. Mr. Okami said, "I love creating shapes, and it's what I do. Creating shapes never exceeds my imagination, so I've continued to work with clay, determined to achieve something new the next time."
This exhibition features a wide variety of works, including flower vases, sake vessels, and tableware for everyday use. Mr. Okami will be present at the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays during the exhibition period. Please feel free to stop by.
